Across the city, with energy and emotion. The MAN CitE was conceived as more than just another approach to e-mobility. Through the progressive cluster design, the driver can feel the energy of MAN’s first full electric inner-city vehicle.
In collaboration with MAN we achieved the goal of adding emotions to the task of inner-city distribution transport! The result left many visitors at the 2018 IAA thrilled: a truck that makes business simpler, more profitable, more sustainable and future-proof.
The CitE was presented by MAN as its newest city truck development at the IAA2018 trade show. Together with MAN, we developed the cluster concept and design within 6 months, from style definition to a final implementation-ready specification. The resutl is a truck with a unique and memorable cluster design, that strengthens the brand experience. The HMI concept includes many innovative higlights, which deviate from conventional vehicle interaction concepts, such as the splitting up of the speedo- and powermeters, to make room for the main menu in the center of the display. The cluster is characterized by easy-to-understand visual metaphors. The urbanity of the vehicle is referenced in the clean and large-scale visual design of the cluster.
The cluster includes an easily-accessible menu for several vehicle settings. Additionally, an animated 3D truck is one of the highlights of the full-digital cluster, showing verhicle components and information, allowing the driver to always have access to vehicle status, with minimal distraction. Another special feature is the ‘calm’ mode. When activated, it only shows essential information ― just the very basics, to help drivers to cope with the demands and stresses of navigating congested inner-city traffic. The charge-state is displayed in real time during charging. That- and its many other unique features, sets the CitE up to be a great drive-friendly sales proposition.

Martin joined designaffairs in 2015 after completing his PhD in the methodological aspects of user tests for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. His work is focused on the constant confrontation that exists between the rapidly-changing challenges of interacting concepts, especially in the automotive sector, bringing it all together to marry the potential of new technologies with users’ needs in both the ideation and the realization phases of projects.
Johannes Huber is an expert in the field of user experience and usability in particular. In his role as Competence Lead he deals with the question of future developments and trends in his field. In addition, Johannes is Associate Director Usability and Project Manager and is heavily involved in the User Centered Design process at designaffairs. The graduate media computer scientist immersed himself early in the world of user experience. Today he also shares his experiences in lectures and workshops on usability methods. The focus here is on the selection of methods, their correct application, and the opportunities and risks of the various approaches.
